A slight gasp escaped her lips as she breathed out.  Turning her cheek, everything was knocked out of her.  She remembered what it was like before when he did this, but never was it quite this...intense.

The first had been interesting, and somewhat predictable.  He had held her arms, right above the elbows, and stared intensely into her eyes.  “Is it okay?” Despite the gentleness in his voice, she knew what was hiding underneath it.  Something, or someone far more dangerous than she could imagine was lurking right under his skin, wanting, daring his own self to allow him to break out.  He never would let that side escape though.  At least, not around her.

There had been no hesitation in her concession.  Briefly, she stood on the tips of her toes while he leaned down.  Their lips touched for mere moments, but after they pulled away she could still feel them lingering.  Brushing her fingers across where the spots that now felt bare, she didn’t even breathe.

His first notion was to apologize.  This was not how he wanted to do it, this was not how he wanted their first one to go.  She hushed him quickly by doing what now felt natural.  His mouth closed, and he accepted her answer.  It was a demand more than anything, and it was clear.  He was not to apologize for that.

Whenever one of them ventured to take the challenge, the antics were almost always upped.  Once, they had sat down staring at the destruction, but it was different.  She knew what he wanted- something different.  The same, but different.  All she had to do was look at him before the question popped out.  “Is it okay?” Her smile and blush told him what words could not, and it was then that it happened.  Her entire body was dunked in ice water and lit on fire at the same time.  It was wonderful, beautiful.

Everything changed after that.  His questions may have always been the same, and her replies identical to before, but the passion was new.  It was fierce.  They grabbed what chances they could in a world that was crumbling down around them.  She did not know if he or she were to live until the next morning, when they fall like so many others they knew.

Falling.  She knew what that was like.  She was feeling it now.  Slipping into the darkness, disappearing from the light.  She had always been his light, would he be lost now?  How would he walk when he couldn’t see his own footsteps?  She prayed he didn’t fail to keep what was important.  She hoped he would remember her for the moments they shared together.  When they would smile and laugh, grin and tease.  He was an awful flirt, and she loved him for it.

As his lips brushed against hers, she noted it was so much softer than any other time before.  It was gentle, the tiger in him gone.  Instead of asking the usual question, tears dripped down his face.  “Please be okay...” It wasn’t a question, it wasn’t a statement.  Not a demand or order.  It was a request, and one that no blush could correct.

“I love you, Donatello,” She whispered.  “Don’t forget that,” As she closed her eyes, she could feel his arms wrapped tightly around her, his pleading sobs echoing into her neck.  They were just as innocent as the day they met, and just as guilty as the blackest soul.  It was her fault she was leaving him, it was her fault the beast would resurface.  She always chased his fears and doubts away, but not this time.  She couldn’t.  Her strength was gone, and this time she could not borrow any from him.  Using the last bit of her love, she pressed her fingers against her lips before caressing his cheek.  The world lost an angel after that moment, and the heavens gained a star.
Dedicated to Whitney, who lost her love Robert on November 30, 2013, two weeks before their wedding. He will not be forgotten, and will always be our star.
